Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, assuring that he will uphold the peace agreements reached with both the President and his political mentor, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Governor Fubara, who was suspended from office on March 18, 2025, following President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency over the political crisis in Rivers State, officially resumed his duties on September 18, 2025. During the six-month emergency rule, Ibok Eket Ibas served as the sole administrator, overseeing local government elections and making key appointments.
In a statewide broadcast after regaining office, Fubara expressed gratitude to the President for mediating in the state’s crisis. He also urged Rivers people to embrace peace, describing it as “the greatest gift anyone can wish for.”
Speaking to journalists after his meeting with Tinubu, Fubara confirmed he had received presidential advice on governance and conflict management.
“The suspension was lifted at midnight on the 17th, and I resumed officially on the 19th. It was important for me to see Mr. President, thank him, and inform him that I have resumed my responsibilities as governor,” he said.
Fubara emphasized that both Tinubu and Wike are working in alignment, stressing that their reconciliation has restored political stability in the oil-rich state.
However, concerns remain over the details of the peace agreement. Niger Delta activist Ann-Kio Briggs criticized the secrecy surrounding the deal, insisting that the people of Rivers State deserve to know the terms negotiated on their behalf.
“It’s unacceptable when politicians make decisions over our heads. We have paid the highest price in this crisis, and it is only right that we know what was agreed upon,” Briggs stated during an interview on Channels Television.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has written to Governor Fubara, requesting the submission of his budget and the list of commissioners to kickstart legislative activities after months of political tension.
