Rivers Political Turmoil: Wike Says He’s Ready to Forgive Fubara—But Sets One Key Condition

Abuja, Nigeria | April 18, 2025 — SpringNewsNG Media Limited
As the Rivers State political crisis continues to generate national attention, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he is open to reconciliation—but only if suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara offers a genuine apology.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, April 18, Wike said that the ongoing feud has persisted due to what he called a lack of sincerity and leadership among stakeholders in the state.

“I’m open to forgiveness, but only if Fubara comes with sincerity,” Wike emphasized. “There’s no point engaging in peace talks that are driven by hypocrisy.”

Presidential Suspension, State of Emergency Deepen Political Rift

The feud between Wike and Fubara, which began shortly after the latter assumed office in 2023, has intensified internal division within the Rivers State House of Assembly, leading to a factional legislative crisis.
As the political deadlock escalated, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State. In a historic move, the president suspended Governor Fubara for six months and appointed a sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs during the transition period.

Wike praised the president’s intervention, revealing that it helped stall a full-blown constitutional crisis.

“The moment Mr. President stepped in, the Assembly members withdrew the impeachment notice. That shows leadership,” he said.

Wike Challenges Elders, Blasts Hypocrisy

In a veiled criticism of Rivers State elites and political actors, Wike questioned the authenticity of peace efforts, stating that no elder or influential figure had made a genuine move to mediate the dispute.

“Let someone name a single elder who has honestly pushed for peace,” Wike challenged. “Everyone is playing to the gallery.”

He warned that without truthful dialogue and genuine repentance, the crisis will only reset and worsen.

“If we don’t resolve this sincerely, we’ll keep going in circles,” he concluded.

The Road Ahead: Will Fubara Apologize?

With Wike drawing a clear line in the sand, the next move lies with Governor Fubara, whose political fate remains uncertain following his suspension. Analysts say the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether cooler heads will prevail or the crisis will deepen.
