The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy, and Development has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to immediately free human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other citizens arrested during demonstrations demanding justice for Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued by the group, FENRAD described the arrests as an unjust suppression of lawful civic action. The organization argued that peaceful protest remains a constitutional right and must not attract criminalization under any circumstance.
FENRAD stated that detaining Sowore and the protesters represents a troubling violation of democratic freedoms and reflects a growing intolerance for dissenting voices in the country. The group maintained that Nigerians have the legitimate right to express concerns over the continued detention of Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, and to call for adherence to due process in his case.
The advocacy organization called on authorities to respect human rights standards, safeguard freedom of expression, and terminate all forms of intimidation against activists and citizens who demand accountability.
FENRAD reiterated that a nation committed to the rule of law cannot continue to arrest individuals for exercising constitutional liberties. It insisted that releasing the detainees unconditionally would signal a renewed respect for civil liberties and help prevent escalating tensions.
