The House of Representatives has passed the 2025 Appropriation Bill, increasing the total budget to ₦54.99 trillion—a ₦700 billion increase from the ₦54.2 trillion initially proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
The budget was approved on Thursday following the consideration and adoption of the report presented by the House Committee on Appropriation.
President Tinubu had initially increased the budget proposal from ₦49.7 trillion to ₦54.2 trillion, attributing the rise to additional revenue generated by key government agencies.
Presenting the final report, Abubakar Abubakar, chairman of the Appropriation Committee, explained that the latest increase was necessary to accommodate additional funding demands from critical ministries and agencies. These include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Department of State Security (DSS), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), among others.
Breakdown of the 2025 Budget
- ₦3.6 trillion – Statutory Transfers
- ₦14.3 trillion – Debt Service
- ₦13 trillion – Recurrent (Non-Debt) Expenditure
- ₦23.9 trillion – Capital Expenditure under the Development Fund
The approved budget will fund key projects and government operations for the 2025 fiscal year, which ends on December 31, 2025.
With this passage, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for concurrence before final approval and presidential assent.
