Release Abubakar Musa Immediately or Face Nigerians – Atiku Warns Tinubu Government

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to immediately release Abubakar Salim Musa, condemning his arrest as part of an escalating clampdown on dissent in Nigeria.

Atiku made the statement on Monday, following reports by Amnesty International Nigeria that Musa was detained on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

“This case highlights the increasingly repressive nature of the Tinubu administration, which continues to target Nigerians for expressing dissent, whether through protests or online criticism,” Atiku said.

He noted that Musa’s only “offence” was his persistent and legitimate criticism of the worsening security situation in Northern Nigeria and across the country.

“Instead of engaging with the issues raised, the government has resorted to intimidation and prosecution,” Atiku added, describing the charges and trial as “bogus” and a “sham,” as Amnesty International also reported.

The former vice president said Musa’s detention is part of a broader pattern, where journalists, students, entertainers, and even NYSC members have faced harassment or arrest simply for speaking out against the government.

“At a time when democracy should thrive, such actions threaten the very foundations of our democratic system, which rely on the protection of fundamental human rights and freedom of expression,” Atiku warned.

He stressed that Nigeria cannot claim to uphold democratic values while citizens are routinely intimidated, assaulted, or detained for voicing criticism.

With general elections approaching, Atiku cautioned that fear and repression undermine both the people’s rights and the ability of the opposition to operate effectively.

He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Musa and all others detained for exercising their constitutional rights.

“I call on the Tinubu administration to release Abubakar Salim Musa and others held for expressing their lawful views,” he said, urging an end to arbitrary arrests and intimidation.

Atiku also appealed to the international community to hold the government accountable and to ensure that Nigeria respects human rights.

“I encourage Nigerians, civil society groups, and patriots to stand united against any further erosion of our freedoms,” he concluded.
