Premier League postpone weekend fixtures after Queen Elizabeth II’s death: When will the matches be played?

September 9,2022

There will be no Premier League games played this weekend after the decision was made to postpone the scheduled fixtures following Queen Elizabeth II’s death on Thursday.

The news comes after it had been communicated to the Premier League and the Football League by the government that matches could go ahead this weekend. However, Premier League clubs decided themselves to call the games off

At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” read a statement issued by the Premier League on Friday.

“To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier league match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s games

When will the postponed Premier League games be played?

It remains to be seen how the Premier League will find a window to play the postponed matches, and the decision raises questions. It is likely that the following weekend’s action will be at risk due to police needing to be reassigned for the funeral, and there may well be consecutive weekends without Premier League football

Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course,” read that same Premier League statement.

The football calendar is already condensed due to the mid-season World Cup, and there aren’t many opportunities for games to be played, particularly for clubs competing in European competitions as well
