Power Outages Cast Shadow Over Nigeria’s “Detty December” Festivities

Story: written by Joseph December 29,2025
Widespread electricity outages have dampened the vibrant mood of Nigeria’s popular “Detty December” season, as persistent power cuts disrupt concerts, nightlife, hospitality businesses, and end-of-year celebrations across major cities.

From Lagos to Abuja and Port Harcourt, frequent blackouts have forced event organisers, clubs, hotels, and restaurants to rely heavily on generators, driving up operating costs and affecting the quality of entertainment experiences. Many residents and tourists have also complained that erratic power supply has reduced the excitement traditionally associated with the festive period.

Small businesses, particularly those in the creative and hospitality sectors, say the unstable electricity situation is eating deep into profits, as spending on fuel and alternative power sources continues to rise. Some event planners have reportedly scaled down activities or passed extra costs on to customers.

Despite the surge in economic activity usually linked to “Detty December,” analysts note that unreliable power supply remains a major structural challenge, limiting the full potential of Nigeria’s tourism and entertainment industries. They warn that unless power infrastructure improves, recurring blackouts will continue to undermine festive seasons and broader economic growth.
