Power Outage Dispute: EEDC Denies Imo Govt Sabotage Claims

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has refuted allegations by the Imo State Government claiming the utility planned a deliberate power shutdown to sabotage the state’s electricity initiatives.

The Imo government, through its Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, had accused EEDC of orchestrating a “massive electricity outage” aimed at undermining state projects.

This comes after armed security personnel, reportedly acting under Imo government instructions, allegedly forced staff at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) office in the state to shut down power, plunging residents into darkness.

Reacting on Sunday, EEDC’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, dismissed the sabotage claims as baseless and unfounded, urging residents and stakeholders to disregard the accusations.

“EEDC has no plans to carry out any major power outages in Imo State. It is unfortunate that the government has chosen propaganda to divert attention and create tension,” Ezeh said.

The utility highlighted that on November 15, 2025, armed policemen allegedly instructed by the state government forced the shutdown at Egbu Station, causing widespread blackout. EEDC emphasized that such actions, not the company, constitute real sabotage.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity supply and service quality, urging the Imo State Government to allow licensed operators to function without interference.

“Going forward, any power disruption in Imo State should not be attributed to EEDC. The responsibility for outages lies squarely with the authorities who impede operational efficiency,” Ezeh added.

EEDC concluded by pledging to continue investing in infrastructure to ensure sustainable electricity distribution for customers across Imo State.
