Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have thwarted a kidnapping attempt and rescued several traders who were abducted along the Igarra–Ibillo highway in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The victims were reportedly attacked by armed men while traveling for business early Monday morning. However, swift intervention by police officers from the Ibillo Division led to a gun duel with the suspects, forcing them to flee into the nearby forest and abandon the captives.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said the rescue operation was successful due to prompt response and intelligence from locals.

He added that no casualties were recorded, and the rescued traders have since been reunited with their families.

Nwabuzor also revealed that a manhunt has been launched to track down the fleeing kidnappers, assuring that the command remains committed to ensuring the safety of commuters and residents along the highway.

He urged road users to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movement to security agencies.
