The Anambra State Police Command has arrested five male suspects accused of impersonating vigilante operatives to carry out armed robbery operations across the state.

The arrest was confirmed on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued in Awka. According to him, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, while investigating a case involving criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

Ikenga disclosed that several dangerous items were recovered from the suspects, including two pump-action rifles, five live cartridges, an ash-coloured shuttle bus, face masks, number plates, and other incriminating materials.

He stated that during questioning, the suspects confessed to their involvement in criminal activities and explained how they posed as vigilante personnel while operating with a shuttle bus to deceive and rob unsuspecting members of the public.

The police spokesperson added that the suspects are currently cooperating with investigators and providing information that could lead to the arrest of other members of the gang.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Anambra State and called on residents to continue assisting the police with timely and credible intelligence to curb criminal activities.
