Police arrest suspects as cultists kill three in Sagamu

Some youths suspected to be cultists on Saturday overran Sagamu, the headquarters of Sagamu Local Government School, Ogun State, killing three persons.

The hoodlums, who were said to be members of the Eiye and Aiye confraternities, renewed their supremacy battle, throwing caution into the wind.

The incident came a day after the governor declared that the cultism rate in the area was worrisome, and that the state would henceforth treat cultism as an act of terrorism.

The incident started on Tuesday and extended till Friday, leaving three persons dead while residents scampered.

Our correspondent gathered the killing of three persons paralysed commercial activities in some parts of the town. It was further gathered that several other persons sustained injuries in the attack, forcing residents of the area to stay indoors

A resident who pleaded anonymity said one of the victims, an attendant at a filling station in Ijokun, was shotin the head on Friday night.

The resident said the deceased was shot in the head by the hoodlums. “We don’t know if he was a cultist, we don’t know what happened. We just saw that he was shot dead by cultists. He was a petrol attendant in Ijokun,” the source said.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that many of the cultists had been arrested by the police.

He stated, “Yes, three persons were killed in Sagamu by cultists, but we have arrested many of them. The Commissioner of Police has directed our tactical teams to be on standby. We have started trailing those involved and many are in custody. We are clamping down on them and more will be arrested.”
