Police Arrest Kidnap Suspect in Nasarawa, Recover Rifles and N6.9m Cash

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered a cache of arms and millions of naira in cash after a lone car accident in Kokona Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, in a statement on Monday, said the incident happened on August 18, 2025, around 9:08 a.m. near the VIO checkpoint in Angwan Mayo.
According to him, two men in an Opel Vectra with registration number Plateau BLD 566 ST fled into the bush after their car crashed. Members of the public and a vigilant VIO officer, who arrived first, discovered a G3 rifle and cash hidden inside the vehicle.
A subsequent search uncovered an AK-47 rifle, a Type 06 rifle, another G3 rifle, three magazines, 57 rounds of live ammunition, and N6.9 million in cash.
Following the discovery, police operatives, working with the military, launched a manhunt. One suspect, identified as Mohammed Tahir from Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, was arrested while attempting to escape through the forest.
During interrogation, Tahir confessed to being part of a seven-man kidnapping syndicate responsible for abducting a lawyer in Nyanya, Abuja, where ransom was collected. He also admitted that he and an accomplice were on their way to Jos to share the ransom money when the crash occurred.
Nansel said the suspect and the recovered exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, on the orders of Commissioner of Police, CP Shettima Jauro Mohammed, for further investigation.
The CP assured residents of the Command’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements from the state. He commended the public for their vigilance and urged continuous cooperation with security agencies.
