Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Maryam Atiku, in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area, for allegedly attempting to bury her newborn baby girl alive in the bush.
According to police reports, Maryam allegedly wrapped pieces of cloth around the infant’s neck, covered her mouth, and carried her to Malam Yaro bush, where she dug a shallow grave and buried the child.
The baby was miraculously rescued when a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, noticed freshly disturbed soil on his farmland and raised an alarm. Villagers rushed to the scene, dug up the ground, and found the child still alive.
She was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Kamba, where doctors confirmed her condition as stable after emergency treatment.
Police spokesperson, Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the arrest, stating that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department had apprehended Maryam, who later confessed to the act.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, strongly condemned the incident, stressing that the command would maintain zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence in the state.
