Tragedy struck in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State after a mob lynched Inspector Lasare Jeremiah, a respected officer of the Plateau State Police Command, following a false alarm raised by a notorious suspect.

According to police spokesperson DSP Alabo Alfred, Inspector Jeremiah, attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), was part of a team mandated to arrest Audu Abdullahi, a suspected criminal who had been terrorizing residents of Nyakala community.

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, detectives trailed Abdullahi from Binchi Village to Nyakala Village, where they intercepted him. In a bid to escape arrest, the suspect allegedly shouted that the officers were motorcycle thieves. The false alarm triggered residents to descend on the officers, beating them mercilessly.

DSP Alfred explained that one of the officers, Inspector Jeremiah, was severely attacked before the mob realized their mistake. When the truth emerged, the angry crowd turned on Abdullahi, beating him as well.

Both victims were rushed to Cottage Hospital, Kisalloi, Bassa, where Inspector Jeremiah later died from his injuries. Abdullahi was referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital, but he also died while receiving treatment.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and warned residents against mob justice, stressing that such actions obstruct lawful investigations and lead to needless loss of lives.

The case is now under investigation by the State CID in Jos.
