Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted the District Head of Birbysng in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, Alhaji Zubairu Usman Garb, alongside two women during a late-night attack on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the armed men stormed the community around 1 a.m., shooting sporadically before whisking away their victims. The district head’s wife, who was initially taken, reportedly managed to escape from her captors.
The Secretary of the Kanam Development Association (KADA), Shehu Kanam, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as another disturbing blow to security in the area.
The attack occurred barely a week after the Ward Head of Shuwaka community in Kyaram District, also within Kanam LGA, was kidnapped and later killed by his abductors.
Community leaders under the Kanam Social Development Association (KSDA), in a joint statement signed by Shehu Kanam and Chairman Garba Aliyu Kanam, condemned the abductions in strong terms. They called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang, security agencies, and elected representatives to take urgent measures to curb the rising wave of kidnappings and banditry in the region.
“The spate of abductions and killings in Kanam has left many families traumatized. We urge authorities to act swiftly to rescue the victims and restore peace,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson DSP Alabo Alfred could not be reached for comments at the time of filing this report.
