Peter Okoye Says Poverty—not Death—is His Biggest Fear
Rewritten Story: written by Daniel December 4,2025
Renowned Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P, has opened up about the one thing that truly frightens him—poverty.
During a recent appearance on the Nancy Isime Show, the artist revealed that while many people fear death, his own fear is returning to the hardship he once experienced growing up.
Mr P recounted a painful childhood memory when his family’s single-room boys’ quarters was demolished after the landlord sold the property. According to him, that experience shaped his lifelong determination never to fall back into poverty.
He said:
“I am not afraid of death. What scares me most in this life is poverty—being broke. I’ve tasted it before. I remember living in a boys’ quarter with my parents and siblings—six boys and two girls—all in one room divided by a curtain.
“One day a bulldozer came and started demolishing the building while we were still inside because the landlord had sold the compound. We were begging for time to relocate.”
The singer said the memory remains a driving force behind his work ethic and commitment to building a better life.
