Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has declared that he will return to Edo State, dismissing threats made by the state’s governor, Monday Okpebholo, regarding his safety.
Obi made this statement while speaking to journalists in Awka, Anambra State, following a donation event at his alma mater, Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha, where he contributed ₦50 million alongside other alumni to support infrastructure development.
Governor Okpebholo had previously warned that Obi’s safety could not be guaranteed if he visited Edo again—a threat that Obi has now firmly brushed aside.
“Threats don’t mean anything to me. I receive threats every day. The only ones that get noticed are those made publicly. If I have to return to Benin to make donations, I definitely will,” Obi said.
“Investing in People, Not Politics” – Obi Urges Leaders
The former governor emphasized that his visit to Edo was about investing in human development, particularly in the health and education sectors. He stated that leaders should focus more on improving the lives of citizens rather than politicizing gestures meant to uplift society.
“I went to Benin to invest in people. If they have good doctors and nurses, they’ll have a better life. What the governor should have done is support what I was doing—not threaten me,” Obi added.
Obi Continues Nationwide School Support Initiative
Obi further stated that his commitment to educational development across Nigeria will not be deterred by political threats. He revealed plans to continue visiting and donating to schools across different states over the coming days.
“I’ll be in a school today, tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday—even Monday. Forget about the threats. They’re a waste of time,” he told reporters.
At CKC Onitsha, Obi explained that the ₦50 million donation was raised in collaboration with other alumni after discussions on the need for teachers’ quarters and a modern administrative block.
He encouraged Nigerians with legitimate means of income to invest in education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, stating:
“I say it every day: those who earn honestly should invest in schools and society. I didn’t say steal and donate—just support where you can.”
Peter Obi’s unwavering stand and continued philanthropic efforts have drawn both praise and criticism, but he insists his mission is to uplift the nation—one school and one community at a time.
