Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has suspended his scheduled public engagements after falling ill during a recent visit to Enugu.

Obi made the announcement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, explaining that the decision followed consultations with his doctors.

“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days’ rest. In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend,” he wrote.

The former Anambra State governor apologised to supporters for any inconvenience caused, adding that he hoped for understanding while he recuperates.

Activities Before the Health Scare

Before taking ill, Obi attended several events in the Southeast:

  • In Enugu, he participated in a tourism programme.
  • He later visited the Good Hope Specialist Hospital, Isulo, in Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, which the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria is acquiring.
  • Obi pledged ₦10 million to support the Diocese’s plan to transform the facility into a modern health complex with a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology.

Ven. Dr. Kamtochukwu Obi, chairman of the Aguata Diocesan Hospital Board, conducted him round the hospital and outlined the Diocese’s vision. Commending the initiative, Obi remarked that “healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence.”

From Isulo, Obi proceeded to Owerri, where he attended a dinner hosted by Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu in honour of his former boss, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. He also watched the Super Eagles defeat Rwanda in a World Cup qualifier, later praising the national team on social media.

What’s Next

Although Obi has suspended his engagements temporarily, his team assured that he will resume once cleared by his doctors. The development has drawn sympathy from supporters across Nigeria, many of whom took to social media to wish him a quick recovery.
