Datti Baba-Ahmed has described former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “political traveller,” accusing him of moving from one party to another in pursuit of a presidential ticket.

Speaking on the wave of defections from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Baba-Ahmed said neither he nor the Labour Party should be blamed for the exits. According to him, those who were welcomed into the party with a presidential platform simply chose to continue their political journey elsewhere.

“In this matter of defection, neither I nor the Labour Party acted as aggressors,” he said. “Some political travellers were accommodated with a presidential ticket, and they moved on. It’s that simple.”

Baba-Ahmed revealed that he made efforts to reconcile aggrieved party members, noting that while some embraced the peace move, others took offence and defected.

“I reached out for reconciliation. Some accepted it, others reacted negatively and left. I have no regrets,” he stated. “I am my own man. I ran for president in 2019 before Peter Obi. I partnered with him in 2023 because I believed it was a chance to unite Nigerians.”

The Labour Party chieftain made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja at the party’s national secretariat, where he formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

His comments come weeks after Peter Obi officially dumped the Labour Party for the ADC in December.
