Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Four-Year Presidency Promise Amid Soludo Criticism

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has restated his commitment to serving a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, declaring that his vow is “sacrosanct.”

Obi’s statement, posted on his official X (Twitter) handle on Sunday, appeared to respond to recent remarks by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who mocked the one-term pledge. Soludo had publicly suggested that any politician who vows to serve only one term despite being constitutionally eligible for two might need psychiatric evaluation.

Obi Cites Global Leadership Examples

In his response, Obi cited historical examples of impactful yet brief leadership:

  • Abraham Lincoln, who served only four years as U.S. President but left a lasting legacy.
  • John F. Kennedy, whose unfinished term still inspires generations.
  • Nelson Mandela, who served just one term in South Africa to set a leadership example.

“Longevity in office is not a mark of success; purposeful, accountable service, however brief, defines true statesmanship,” Obi stated.

He stressed that his track record as Anambra State governor proves that he keeps his promises and governs with transparency and prudence.

“My Word Is My Bond” – Obi

Obi reaffirmed that if elected, he will not exceed four years in office, emphasizing that 48 months is enough for any focused leader to:

  • Sanitize governance and tackle corruption
  • Strengthen security with accountable resource use
  • Prioritize education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation
  • Promote agriculture, technology, and manufacturing to transform Nigeria into a productive economy

“I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. My vow is a solemn commitment rooted in my conviction that leadership with integrity is possible,” Obi said.

ADC Coalition Participation

Meanwhile, a source within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) clarified that while Obi is actively involved in the ADC-led opposition coalition, he has not officially joined the party as a card-carrying member.

The ADC granted Obi and other political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a special waiver to participate in the coalition while maintaining their current party memberships.

This arrangement allows Obi to continue supporting Labour Party candidates—notably in the upcoming Anambra governorship election—while contributing to efforts aimed at building a united opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
