Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over U.S. Labeling Nigeria a ‘Country of Concern,’ Warns of Deepening Security Crisis

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced deep concern over the United States’ recent classification of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) under former U.S. President Donald Trump, describing it as a grim reflection of the nation’s deteriorating security situation.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi said the U.S. action — and the accompanying threat of possible military intervention — should alarm all well-meaning Nigerians, as it exposes how far the country has descended into lawlessness and violence.
He lamented that Nigeria is currently experiencing “an unprecedented wave of insecurity, mass killings, and destruction of property,” blaming the worsening state of affairs on the government’s failure to act decisively.
Quoting reports by Amnesty International, Obi noted that more than 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023, adding that such continuous bloodshed is “unjustifiable and unacceptable.”
The former Anambra State governor attributed the crisis to leadership failure, insisting that with competent governance and effective use of resources, much of the tragedy could have been avoided. He faulted the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he described as a lack of vision, patriotism, and accountability.
“While the current insecurity predates this administration, what is most troubling is the government’s lack of competence, compassion, and commitment to protect citizens. The APC-led leadership has failed to build a Nigeria where justice, peace, and security prevail,” Obi said.
He called for urgent diplomatic dialogue between Nigeria and the U.S., emphasizing the importance of sustaining the long-standing partnership between both democracies in promoting regional peace and stability.
“As allies, Nigeria and the United States must engage constructively to resolve these disturbing concerns. Both nations should act swiftly to restore peace and uphold Nigeria’s international credibility,” he added.
