The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has issued a new directive requiring all dispatch riders and courier service providers to adopt reflective jackets and visibility tapes during evening and nighttime deliveries.
The announcement, which takes effect immediately, was made on Sunday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Innovation, Mr. Oluwatobi Idowu, on behalf of the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olawale Musa. The statement was conveyed through the Ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola.
Musa explained that the move is part of the state government’s broader commitment to road safety and accident prevention, particularly involving motorcycle and bicycle delivery riders.
According to the directive, all riders working between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. must wear reflective jackets, while all delivery motorcycles and bicycles are to be fitted with reflective tapes or markings to enhance visibility for other road users.
The Ministry further instructed courier companies to adequately educate their riders and enforce the new safety requirements. Compliance will be monitored and enforced by agencies such as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS).
Supporting the initiative, Glovo Nigeria, one of the state’s leading delivery platforms, announced that it has begun procuring 3,000 reflective vests to distribute free of charge to its riders within the next month. In a letter signed by its General Manager, Mr. Lamide Akinola, the company commended the government for the measure and urged other logistics firms in Lagos to also comply.
