Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly condemned the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Anambra State. Expressing his shock and heartbreak, Obi described the attack as “inhumane, barbaric, and primitive,” expressing deep shame that such an act could occur in 2025.
The incident, which has sparked outrage across the country, involves a disturbing viral video showing armed men, allegedly members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi (Agunechemba Vigilante Group), raiding a corps members’ lodge in Anambra. In the video, a female corps member, identified as Jennifer Edema Elohor, is seen being beaten and stripped by gun-wielding men.
Obi, who served as governor of Anambra, expressed his sorrow on X (formerly Twitter), stressing that no society should tolerate the abuse and humiliation of its citizens, particularly women. “That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” Obi wrote. “What happened is not only a violation of law and morality but a direct assault on our collective humanity.”
The former governor called for the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the assault, emphasizing that such actions should not be tolerated. He also urged the government to introduce stronger safeguards, policies, and communal values to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly women.
“Our humanity must always come first,” Obi stated. “Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty.”
