The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially announced that its highly anticipated elective national convention will now take place in November 2025, with a new venue set for Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
Initially scheduled for August in Kano State, the convention has been rescheduled and relocated as confirmed by PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba. The update was delivered during the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday.
Ologunagba noted that the decision to move the event was made to better accommodate party members and to ensure smooth logistical planning.
PDP Acting Chairman Confirms Return of Defectors from Coalition
In a related development, Acting PDP National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum revealed that many former PDP members who had defected to join a coalition of opposition groups have now begun returning to the party’s fold.
Damagum explained that several of the defectors admitted they never formally left the PDP, but merely participated in a handful of coalition meetings. He dismissed the coalition as a “failed political experiment”, asserting that only the PDP possesses the national structure, grassroots strength, and historical legacy required to effectively govern Nigeria.
PDP Eyes Return to Power in 2027
Damagum further declared that the PDP remains the only viable alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government and emphasized the party’s commitment to reclaiming power in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
As the PDP prepares for its national convention in Ibadan this November, expectations are high for strategic decisions that could shape the future direction of the party and its chances of securing victory in future elections.
