Fear gripped students of Government Girls College, Maiduguri, Borno State, after they reportedly sighted suspicious individuals near their hostels, triggering a mass escape from the dormitories in the middle of the night.
A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the students running out of the school compound in panic. According to one of the girls who spoke anonymously, several masked men dressed in black allegedly entered the hostel area while many students were praying in the school mosque.
“Some men in black with masks came into our hostel while we were praying,” the student said, urging authorities to allow them return to their homes to avoid a repeat of the 2014 Chibok abduction.
She pleaded, “We are calling on the Chief Security Officer of the state, the Borno State Police Commissioner, and the Commissioner of Education to intervene immediately before anything terrible happens.”
The incident comes amid a renewed wave of school attacks across northern Nigeria.
In Niger State, 265 students and staff — including 239 pupils — were recently kidnapped from St. Mary’s School.
In Kebbi State, roughly 25 students were abducted in another school invasion, heightening tensions and demanding swift action from authorities.
These developments follow a decade of recurring school-targeted assaults, including the infamous 2014 Chibok girls’ kidnapping, highlighting the persistent insecurity confronting educational institutions in the region.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the Borno State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful, as inquiries sent to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, went unanswered.
