Tension has gripped the Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State after a newly launched state security outfit uncovered over 30 graves, a shrine, and arms in a popular hotel operating under the guise of legitimate business.

The hotel, officially registered as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites but popularly known as La Cruise Hotel, was located along the Onitsha-Owerri Road. It was demolished on Saturday following a tip-off from a whistleblower and subsequent intelligence gathered by security operatives.

During the operation, authorities made chilling discoveries, including over 30 partitioned graves in the building’s basement, a shrine, military camouflage, and arms with cartridges. However, it remains unclear whether any corpses were found or arrests made, as officials have yet to confirm these details.

Special Adviser to the Anambra State Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, declined to comment on the incident, referring inquiries to the governor’s Press Secretary, Christian Aburime. Aburime later confirmed that the demolition adhered to the state’s Homeland Security Law, which mandates the destruction of any structure linked to criminal activities.

He stated, “The hotel was a hub for kidnappers and other criminal activities. Investigations are ongoing, and further details will be shared as they emerge.”

Residents of the Oba community expressed mixed reactions, with some raising concerns over the possibility of other similar establishments in the state. A witness claimed the graves might have been partitioned for fish ponds, further fueling speculation.

In a related operation, the Agunechemba Security Squad raided another criminal hideout in a brothel at Akwu-Ukwu Oba in the same local government area. Two suspected kidnappers and five prostitutes were arrested, and the building was immediately demolished under the state’s security laws.

The crackdown underscores Anambra State’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements. Authorities have vowed to continue investigations and apprehend those still at large.
