The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised the state government’s introduction of new levies on social events, describing the policy as insensitive and burdensome to residents already struggling under economic hardship.
According to a document obtained by DAILY POST on Wednesday, the Seyi Makinde-led administration approved a levy of ₦35,000 for activities such as burials, weddings, and chieftaincy ceremonies, while naming, birthday, engagement, graduation and wake-keep events will attract ₦25,000 each.
Reacting to the development, APC Publicity Secretary Wasiu Olawale Sadare denounced the policy, calling it “anti-people” and urging the governor to reverse it immediately.
Sadare argued that the new levies would only worsen the financial strain on citizens, especially civil servants, artisans, traders and commercial transport operators who are already overtaxed.
He said, “We call on Governor Makinde to withdraw this oppressive policy immediately. Forcing residents to pay levies before hosting social events is unfair and insensitive. The current economic reality is harsh enough — people seek joy in small gatherings, and now even that is being taxed.”
The APC spokesperson noted that the imposition of entertainment charges at a time when inflation and unemployment are rising amounts to “pushing citizens to the wall.”
Sadare further accused the state government of prioritising revenue collection over the welfare of its people, adding that the policy would stifle social activities and deepen poverty across the state.
He therefore appealed to the governor to suspend the levies, warning that continued enforcement could trigger widespread discontent among residents.
