The Kano State Fire Service has reported that a major fire incident ravaged a large portion of Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area, destroying more than 500 shops.

In a statement released on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, stated that the fire began at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday. The control room was alerted when Commander Abdulmalik Muhammed of the Gari Fire Station placed an emergency call regarding the unfolding situation.

Firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station were immediately mobilised and dispatched to the market. Upon arrival, they discovered that an extensive market space measuring roughly 3,000 by 2,500 feet, with about 1,000 makeshift stalls, had been engulfed by the flames. Approximately 529 stalls were completely destroyed.

The fire service team worked swiftly to contain the blaze, managing to stop it from spreading to the remaining sections of the market. A fire jet from Comm 9 supported the firefighting efforts.

According to initial findings, the fire may have been triggered by intoxicated individuals staying within the market premises, although further investigations are ongoing.

The Fire Service reiterated its commitment to community safety and encouraged market authorities to strengthen preventive measures to avoid a recurrence of such destructive incidents
