Over 200 National Assembly Bills Threatened as Federal Government Bans Creation of New Tertiary Institutions

More than 200 bills passed by the National Assembly face uncertainty after the Federal Government announced a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions.

The policy, approved on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was based on a presentation by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s higher education sector is already plagued by overstretched resources, under-utilised institutions, and falling academic standards, making the creation of new universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education unsustainable.

“The Federal Government has decided to place a seven-year freeze on establishing new tertiary institutions. This will allow us to strengthen existing ones and improve academic quality,” Alausa explained.

Despite the ban, the council approved the establishment of nine new universities, bringing further debate on the policy’s timing and implications for legislative bills awaiting implementation.

The decision has raised concerns within the education sector, with stakeholders warning that hundreds of bills passed by lawmakers to create new institutions across the country may now become redundant.
