At least 20 people were killed on Monday night in Bindi, a community within the Ta-Hoss district of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau State, as suspected Fulani militias launched a deadly attack. The violence, which also left dozens injured, has once again highlighted the persistent insecurity plaguing Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers stormed the village while residents were asleep, conducting a coordinated house-to-house assault. Women, children, and the elderly were among those targeted, many unable to escape the carnage. Survivors described the assailants as heavily armed and operating with military-like precision.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), Riyom chapter, condemned the massacre. Signed by Chairman Gideon Manjal and Publicity Secretary Gadu Daniel Dong, the statement described the incident as part of an ongoing campaign aimed at displacing indigenous populations and seizing ancestral lands.

“This attack occurred despite the visible presence of security forces in and around the area, including armored military vehicles,” the group stated. COPDEM accused the government and security agencies of negligence, alleging that the identities and locations of the attackers are well-known but remain unchallenged.

“These known threats continue to strike with impunity,” the group added, calling for urgent military intervention to dismantle terrorist enclaves in the region. COPDEM also appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the Plateau State government to launch a high-level security operation and provide humanitarian assistance to the affected communities.

The group further criticized the lack of consistent government response, noting that areas such as Ta-Hoss, Jol, Rim, and Bachi have endured repeated attacks with little to no protection or justice delivered.

As of the time of this report, both the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), the special military task force responsible for Plateau and surrounding states, have yet to issue any official statements on the incident.

The Bindi attack adds to a growing list of violent outbreaks in Plateau State, reflecting a wider crisis of ethnic and religious conflict across Nigeria’s Middle Belt. Local residents continue to call for long-term solutions, security guarantees, and justice to halt the recurring bloodshed and displacement.
