Massive tension erupted across major cities in the Southeast on Monday as angry youths and civil rights groups took to the streets, accusing regional political leaders of betraying the struggle for Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

The demonstrators, waving flags and chanting solidarity songs, alleged that certain Southeast governors and lawmakers have silently benefited from the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

According to the protesters, the political elite in the region have failed to unite or speak truth to power, instead using Kanu’s ordeal to negotiate personal gains from the federal government.

One of the protesters, who identified himself as Swore, said:

“Our problem is not only President Tinubu. The real enemies are our Southeast leaders who pretend to love us but secretly sabotage every effort for Kanu’s freedom. We want him released now—no excuses.”

The protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations until the federal government and Southeast leaders engage in transparent dialogue to secure Kanu’s unconditional release.

They also warned that continued silence from the region’s politicians could worsen the sense of distrust among the Igbo people and deepen the call for justice and self-determination.
