The Osun State Police Command has called on residents, particularly those engaged in the scrap and waste recycling business, to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies to prevent accidents involving explosive materials.

This appeal was made by the Commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Base 16, Osogbo, Superintendent Godwin Ogigha, during an explosive awareness and sensitisation programme held for members of the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employees of Nigeria (NASWDEN), Osun State Chapter.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the campaign was organised by the EOD and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit of the Command. The initiative aimed to improve public safety awareness by educating participants on how to identify, handle, and respond to explosive materials safely.

SP Ogigha emphasised that under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property throughout the state.

“We urge all residents, especially those in the scrap and waste sector, to stay vigilant and report any suspicious items or activities immediately,” Ogigha stated.

He commended NASWDEN members for their active participation and encouraged them to put the lessons learned into practice to ensure a safer working environment.

The training featured practical demonstrations and interactive sessions on how to recognise and safely respond to potential explosive ordnance, as well as the importance of adhering to safety procedures in their daily activities.

Representatives of NASWDEN expressed gratitude to the police for the initiative, pledging to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to enhance public safety and security in the state.

“We appreciate the Police Command for this timely sensitisation and will ensure our members comply with safety standards and report suspicious findings without delay,” the association stated.

DSP Ojelabi added that the sensitisation exercise is part of the Command’s broader community engagement and safety strategy, aimed at preventing avoidable explosions and building trust between the police and the public.

He assured that the Osun State Police Command would continue to partner with relevant organisations and local communities to strengthen awareness and enhance collective security across the state.
