Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved one step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dominant 4–1 extra-time triumph over Gabon, powered by a brilliant Victor Osimhen double in Thursday night’s CAF play-off semi-final in Rabat, Morocco.

The Eagles began the match on the front foot, controlling the tempo and carving out early chances. Bright Osayi-Samuel and Osimhen came close, with the Napoli striker hitting the woodwork in the 17th minute. Gabon, however, held their defensive shape, keeping the score level at halftime.

Nigeria eventually broke the deadlock early in the second half when Sevilla forward Akor Adams pounced on a loose ball to put the team ahead. But Gabon stunned the Eagles with an 89th-minute equaliser from Mario Lemina, pushing the game into extra time.

Extra time belonged entirely to Nigeria. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead with a calm finish after a clever assist from skipper Wilfred Ndidi. Osimhen then took full control, scoring twice to secure his 30th and 31st goals for the national team and seal a commanding victory.

The win sends Nigeria into Sunday’s play-off final, where they will battle the winner of the DR Congo vs Cameroon clash for a spot in the March 2026 Intercontinental Play-Offs.

The result brings relief after a tense week and keeps the nation’s World Cup ambitions firmly alive.
