Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu holds the sole authority to end Kanu’s ongoing prosecution.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Ejimakor stated that the president possesses the constitutional power to discontinue the trial if he truly wishes to resolve the matter.
“As it stands, it lies with President Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because once the President halts the prosecution, the trial ends,” Ejimakor wrote, adding that “the buck stops at the President’s table.”
The lawyer, however, noted that while the final decision rests with the president, the courts also play a vital role in safeguarding justice.
“Nonetheless, the courts can step in to stem the tide of injustice,” he said.
Ejimakor’s remarks came amid peaceful demonstrations by pro-Biafra supporters across several Southeast states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Monday. The protesters called for Kanu’s immediate release from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody, where he has remained since June 2021.
