Ondo Horror: Dangote Truck Loses Control, Crushes Ten, Including Pregnant Woman, in Akungba-Akoko

A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of at least ten people, including a pregnant woman, in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The crash, which occurred on Wednesday evening, involved a Dangote truck loaded with cement that lost control and ploughed into roadside shops along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare expressway.
The tragic incident sent shockwaves through the community and threw residents and students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) into mourning.
Eyewitnesses said the truck was descending a slope when the driver allegedly lost control. The vehicle veered off the highway, ramming into nearby shops and trapping several victims beneath the wreckage.
One witness said, “The trailer came speeding from the hill. We’re not sure whether the barricade was opened or broken, but it smashed through it and crushed people. About five were dead instantly, and more bodies were found under the truck.”
Among the deceased was a pregnant woman whose remains were later recovered by emergency officials.
Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other rescue agencies quickly arrived at the scene to retrieve bodies and clear the debris from the busy route.
Confirming the incident, FRSC Sector Commander in Ondo State, Samuel Ibitoye, said the crash involved a Dangote truck carrying cement that lost control after hitting a barricade near the university gate.
According to him, “Eight persons died in the crash — five males, two females, and a male child.”
He further cautioned drivers to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained before setting out on trips and urged strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the state’s roads.
