Ogun State Faces Outcry as N34bn Spent on Official Vehicles Amid Worsening Road Conditions

Story: written by Daniel April 2,2026
Amid worsening road conditions across Ogun State, government records reveal that more than N34 billion was allocated between 2023 and 2025 for the purchase of official vehicles for top government officials, sparking public concern over priorities.

While motorists continue to struggle with dilapidated roads filled with potholes, erosion, and dangerous stretches, state expenditures show heavy spending on luxury SUVs, sedans, and utility vehicles for lawmakers, commissioners, and local government officials.

One of the most alarming examples is the Adiyan–Orudu Gasline Road in Ifo Local Government Area, which has become a dangerous route for residents of over 25 surrounding communities. During rainy seasons, the road becomes flooded with water-filled potholes and hidden erosion pits, making travel extremely hazardous.

Residents say the poor condition of the road has led to multiple accidents and deaths. One tragic case is that of Aina Opeyemi, who died after losing control of his vehicle on the road following rainfall. Community members and family sources describe the road as one that has long failed the people.

Community leaders also report that more than 30 lives have been lost along the Adiyan–Orudu corridor over the past 15 years, with many others injured and property destroyed due to accidents linked to the road’s condition.

The situation is not limited to one area. Across Ogun State, roads such as Oke-Aro, Lambe, Ope-Ilu, and the Agbado–Abule-Ijoko corridor are in poor condition, making transportation difficult and increasing the cost of moving goods and services.

In the Yewa South Local Government Area, another tragic incident claimed the life of a child who fell from a motorcycle on the Ilaro–Ibese Expressway, highlighting how dangerous many roads have become.

Business operators and traders say the state of the roads has disrupted commerce, forcing them to spend more on transportation and endure delays in moving goods between communities.

Data from traffic agencies also shows a worrying rise in accidents. Reports indicate that hundreds of people have been killed in road crashes in recent years, with many incidents linked to poor infrastructure, including damaged roads, blocked drainage systems, and unsafe road surfaces.

Despite these challenges, budget records show that the Ogun State government spent over N34.3 billion on official vehicles between 2023 and 2025. These include high-end SUVs and other vehicles distributed across ministries and government offices.

Analysts argue that the funds spent on vehicles could have been used to construct or rehabilitate hundreds of kilometres of roads, potentially transforming transportation and reducing accidents across the state.

Experts have described the situation as a case of misplaced priorities, stressing that road infrastructure should be given more attention because of its direct impact on safety, economic growth, and public welfare.

Responding to criticism, Governor Dapo Abiodun has maintained that his administration has undertaken more road projects than previous governments, stating that efforts are ongoing to improve infrastructure across the state.

However, residents and analysts continue to call for greater focus on fixing deteriorating roads, warning that continued neglect could lead to further loss of lives and economic hardship.
