Ibafo, Ogun State – July 28, 2025 – The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 29-year-old man, Victor Kalu, for allegedly attempting to commit suicide within the premises of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) in Ibafo.
According to police reports, the incident occurred late Friday night around 10:45 p.m. when Kalu was spotted trying to hang himself from an electric pole inside the church compound. His suicide attempt was foiled by the church’s Chief Security Officer, whose swift intervention saved the suspect’s life.
Kalu was handed over to the police around 10:10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Officers from the Ibafo Police Division promptly visited the scene, interviewed witnesses, and documented the incident with photographic evidence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Victor Kalu, who resides at Plot 7, Oluwa Sesan Street, Ejigbo Road, Ikotun, Lagos, confessed that he had been battling extreme financial hardship. He told investigators that he had borrowed money from an online loan company and had been subjected to constant threats and harassment due to his inability to repay the debt.
“Mr. Kalu explained that he became overwhelmed by the pressure and decided to end his life, choosing the church premises as the location,” a police source revealed.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Kalu is currently in custody while further investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attempted suicide.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about the growing mental health crisis and the impact of predatory online lending practices across Nigeria. Authorities are urging individuals struggling with debt or depression to seek help from professional counselors or support organizations rather than resorting to self-harm.
