The Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South Local Government under the National Youth Service Corps, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, on Tuesday.
Victoria Ariyo reportedly died from complications linked to a terminated pregnancy while serving under the LGI. Sources indicated that Olalekan, who was allegedly in a romantic relationship with the deceased, had informed colleagues of her death and mobilised other corps members to organise her burial at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
A source also noted that Ariyo’s death comes less than a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary—Ariyo’s friend—died under mysterious circumstances. Mary was attached to Ogun State Television as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) while serving under Abeokuta South LG.
A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, stating, “He is currently in custody at the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, declined to comment on the LGI’s arrest but confirmed that investigations into Ariyo’s death are ongoing. “I can confirm that the case of Victoria Ariyo’s demise is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” he said.
