Obi Slams Tinubu Administration Over ADC Leadership Dispute, Calls Situation “Shameful”

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the ongoing leadership tussle within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the situation as a setback for democratic values.
In a post shared on X, Obi expressed disappointment over what he termed the erosion of democratic principles, noting that individuals who once stood against military rule during the era of General Sani Abacha are now allegedly behaving in ways that contradict those ideals.
He argued that those associated with the pro-democracy movement under NADECO appear to have abandoned the values they once defended, adding that political power often exposes true character.
Obi wrote: “Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers. What a shame.”
He further stated that it was ironic that figures who fought for democracy during Abacha’s regime are now, in his view, acting in a manner that undermines the same freedoms they once advocated. He suggested that the current situation could even lead to a re-evaluation of past struggles for democracy.
His comments come amid the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently delisted the names of former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively.
INEC also declined to recognize Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking legal recognition as national chairman, stating that it would not acknowledge any faction within the party until a court delivers a final judgment.
The electoral body further announced that it would suspend monitoring of any party congresses or conventions organized by the competing factions, pending the outcome of the case at the Federal High Court.
