A Northern-based group under the platform Bring Back Our Goodluck has tendered a public apology to former President Goodluck Jonathan over past allegations linking him to the sponsorship of Boko Haram insurgents during his tenure.
Speaking in Maiduguri, the National Chairman of the group, Grema Kyari, admitted that the narrative used against Jonathan in the build-up to the 2015 elections was false and orchestrated by both internal and external forces seeking regime change. He specifically accused foreign powers, including the Obama-Biden administration at the time, of colluding with Nigerian politicians to oust Jonathan from power.
Kyari revealed that the group plans to embark on a nationwide sensitisation tour before staging a one-million-man march to Jonathan’s country home in Bayelsa to persuade him to join the 2027 presidential race.
“During Jonathan’s administration, many of us were deceived into believing he sponsored Boko Haram. Today, with clearer understanding, we know those accusations were baseless. On behalf of Nigerians misled by this falsehood, we tender an unreserved apology,” Kyari said.
He praised Jonathan’s democratic credentials, recalling how the former president peacefully conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 to avert post-election violence. He also highlighted Jonathan’s refusal to bow to international pressure to legalise same-sex marriage in Nigeria and his willingness to adjust policies like fuel subsidy removal in response to citizens’ protests.
Kyari contrasted Jonathan’s leadership style with that of the current administration, arguing that Nigeria is in dire need of a leader who values unity, peace, and compassion over personal ambition.
According to him, Jonathan’s inclusive appointments and commitment to national unity remain qualities Nigerians are yearning for in today’s political climate.
