NNPC Sets 2026 Target to Add 1.8bcf/d Gas Supply as Local Demand Climbs

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has unveiled plans to ramp up domestic gas supply by an extra 1.8 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in 2026, responding to Nigeria’s rapidly growing energy needs.
The disclosure was made in Abuja during a briefing with members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors. NNPC said its subsidiaries—NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services and Nigerian Exploration and Production Limited—are expected to lift output by 1.496bcf/d and 223.6mmscf/d respectively within the year.
Figures from the Gas Master Plan 2026 show the expansion is key to Nigeria’s ambition of supplying 10bcf/d by 2027 and 12bcf/d by 2030. NNPC officials noted that demand is surging across LNG exports, power generation, industrial parks, and compressed natural gas (CNG) for transportation.
Speaking on the strategy, NNPC Group Managing Director, Bayo Ojulari, said the plan aligns with the presidential directive to scale gas production and unlock fresh investments. He added that the roadmap targets over $60 billion in new investments across the oil and gas value chain by 2030.
Ojulari highlighted critical success factors, including strong governance, alignment among industry players, access to finance through bankable projects, competitive fiscal terms—especially for deepwater gas—and power sector reforms to strengthen the gas-to-power chain.
NNPC further explained that the master plan adopts a hub-based development model, clustering assets to optimise infrastructure and output. A recent hub-ranking exercise identified 23 high-potential hubs expected to drive gas supply growth in the near to medium term.
