Nnamdi Kanu Raises Alarm Over Failing Health in DSS Custody, Urges NMA to Investigate Medical Negligence

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of compromising his health through what he described as negligent and falsified medical practices while in custody.

Kanu made the allegations in a formal letter dated September 29, 2025, addressed to the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). The letter, titled “Grave concerns regarding my medical treatment and health management in DSS custody,” appealed for urgent intervention and accountability.

According to Kanu, his already fragile health—worsened by his alleged violent abduction from Kenya—has deteriorated under DSS detention. He claimed that inconsistent treatments, manipulated medical records, and denial of proper care have placed his life at risk.

“This letter is intended not only to bring my condition to the formal attention of the NMA but also to invoke the ethical responsibilities of the medical profession under Nigerian law and international human rights standards,” Kanu wrote.

In his appeal, Kanu demanded that the NMA:

  • Investigate alleged manipulation of his medical records in DSS custody.
  • Protect independent practitioners, especially Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, whom he credited with lifesaving intervention.
  • Ensure the immediate release of the NMA medical team’s September 22, 2025, report, which a Federal High Court has ordered to be filed within four days.
  • Address the severe risks of untreated conditions, including tinnitus-induced sleep deprivation, which he says continues to endanger his life.

The IPOB leader’s latest outcry comes amid ongoing legal and political battles over his detention, with renewed calls from rights groups and supporters for his immediate release and access to proper medical care.
