Nine Convicted for Internet Fraud in Kwara as EFCC Secures Multiple Sentences and Asset Forfeitures

Ilorin, Nigeria — July 22, 2025 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured the conviction of nine individuals involved in cybercrime and internet fraud in Kwara State. The convictions were handed down by various courts sitting in Ilorin, following separate arraignments by the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Command.

The convicted fraudsters are:

  • Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi
  • Afolabi Faith Olatoye

  • Abdulkadir Taofeek

The cases were presided over by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court and Justices Haleema Saleeman and Sulaiman Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court.

Convictions for Cybercrime, Fraud, and Unlawful Retention of Criminal Proceeds

According to EFCC spokespersons, the convicts were charged with offenses ranging from cybercrime and impersonation to conspiracy and illegal possession of criminal proceeds.

One of the high-profile convicts, Otitoju Moses Sesan, a 31-year-old gospel musician, was found guilty of unlawfully retaining over N8.4 million in his UBA account. His actions violated Section 17(a) and (b) of the EFCC Act, 2004.

The EFCC presented confessional statements, forensic exhibits, and recovered funds as evidence in court through prosecuting counsel Aliyu Adebayo, Sesan Ola, Rashidat Alao, and Mustapha Kaigama.

Sentences and Asset Forfeitures

  • Ayodele Joseph Daisi: 8 months imprisonment without option of fine. His Techno 19 mobile phone and N243,750 in his UBA account were forfeited to the Federal Government.
  • Adeoye Joseph: 8 months imprisonment without option of fine. He forfeited $220, an iPhone 13, and a Techno Pop 9 device.
  • Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik: 6 months imprisonment. His iPhone 16 and Samsung S10 were forfeited.
  • Abdulkadir Taofeek: 3 years imprisonment or a N500,000 fine, with forfeiture of N800,000, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and a Samsung phone.
  • Emeka Oluwatobi Achi, Isaac Oluwafemi, and Afolabi Olatoye: 6 months imprisonment each or N100,000 fine. Achi must also refund N3.35 million within three months and report biweekly to EFCC with his parents until full restitution is made.
  • Zubeiru Zubeiru Junior: Sentenced to 15 months in prison or N350,000 fine, with forfeiture of an iPhone XR and $325.

EFCC Reaffirms Commitment to Cybercrime Prosecution

The EFCC reiterated its commitment to eradicating cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice, warning that internet fraud and illegal financial activities will not go unpunished. The agency urged the public, especially youths, to shun cybercrime and engage in legitimate ventures.

The convictions mark another milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against cybercrime and the enforcement of accountability under the rule of law.
