Nigeria’s Airline Crisis Deepens as Global Aircraft Leasing Supply Dries Up

Nigeria’s aviation sector is facing a worsening aircraft shortage as local airlines struggle to secure new planes from global leasing firms. This challenge stems from a growing global supply crunch, with aircraft manufacturers falling behind on production and delivery schedules.

Leasing companies—responsible for supplying over 50% of the world’s commercial aircraft—are experiencing inventory shortages due to delays from major manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. These delays are driven by supply chain disruptions, production bottlenecks, and a surge in demand from airlines worldwide trying to modernize their fleets post-COVID.

Nigerian carriers, already grappling with rising operating costs and naira depreciation, now face further hurdles in fleet expansion or renewal. Without access to new or replacement aircraft, flight schedules may shrink, fares could spike, and overall air connectivity within and outside the country might suffer.

Experts warn that unless global manufacturers ramp up deliveries or leasing firms increase availability, Nigeria’s aviation industry may encounter its most turbulent period yet.
