Nigerian troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Hadin Kai, have rescued 74 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from a possible abduction by Boko Haram/ISWAP militants in Borno State.
Counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama reported on X that the incident occurred along the Buratai–Kamuya road after the corps members’ vehicles broke down near a notorious kidnapping area. The rescued group included 36 males and 38 females.
According to Makama, troops were quickly deployed after a CCTV system monitored by the military detected suspicious movement involving three buses. “On arrival, troops found the NYSC members stranded and immediately acted to prevent a potential abduction by Boko Haram or ISWAP operatives,” the report stated.
The corps members had initially been escorted by 7 Division Garrison troops from Maiduguri to Damaturu. However, they continued their journey toward Hawul Local Government Area without informing Sector 2 Headquarters or having an armed escort.
Reports indicate that the NYSC members were on an evangelical mission when the incident occurred. They are now being accommodated safely at Buratai, following the successful military rescue.
