The Senate Committee on Finance has withdrawn its earlier call for President Bola Tinubu to remove Hussaini Magaji as Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The committee had last Thursday recommended Magaji’s sack over his repeated failure to honour invitations from lawmakers, a resolution reached during a session with the Federal Government’s economic team. However, the panel reversed its stance on Monday after the CAC boss appeared before the committee and tendered an apology.
The motion to rescind the earlier decision was introduced by Senator Isa Jibrin (Kogi East) and seconded by Senator Nasir Daura (Katsina North). Before granting him reprieve, the committee chairman sharply criticised Magaji, accusing him of showing disregard for legislative oversight by repeatedly absenting himself or sending junior officials in his stead.
He reminded the Registrar-General that the National Assembly has constitutional authority to oversee revenue-generating agencies and noted that the committee had already recommended his removal before his eventual appearance.
Responding, Magaji apologised unreservedly and assured senators that the lapses would not be repeated. He attributed his earlier absence to communication failures and disclosed that the Commission has now set up a dedicated liaison office to manage engagements with the National Assembly.
Several senators spoke in his defence, describing him as a diligent public servant who would not intentionally undermine the Senate’s authority. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), who had initially moved the motion seeking Magaji’s removal, also appealed for the recommendation to be withdrawn.
Following a voice vote, committee members unanimously agreed to reverse the earlier resolution. Nonetheless, the panel expressed dissatisfaction with the CAC’s presentations on its 2024 and 2025 budget proposals, describing them as insufficient. Lawmakers consequently deferred consideration of the reports and directed Magaji to return on Thursday with more comprehensive submissions.
