The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 29 suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN) during a raid on their alleged camp in Nempi, Oru West Local Government Area. The raid, conducted by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, took place on Saturday.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ADP Henry Okoye, the operation led to the arrest of 25 male and four female suspects. The camp was reportedly dismantled following intelligence gathered from the arrest of Anukuru Nnana Emmanuel, a 25-year-old man apprehended on September 15, 2024, in Mgbidi. Emmanuel’s confession is said to have provided the police with crucial information that led them to the camp’s location.
“During the operation, several dangerous items were recovered, including four pump action guns, two locally made revolvers, five locally made pistols, three AK-47 magazines, a Point of Sale (POS) machine, and 20 rounds of live cartridges,” Okoye said. Additionally, a white SUV and local ‘bullet-proof charms’ allegedly used by the group were also seized. Over 200,000 naira, reportedly extorted from kidnapping victims, was found as well.
The police spokesperson emphasized that these recoveries highlighted the ongoing threat posed by these groups in Imo State, particularly regarding violent crimes and insecurity.
“Efforts are ongoing to trace the manufacturers of the locally made firearms,” Okoye stated. He further reassured the public that the Command is committed to restoring peace and ensuring safety across the state.
The Imo State Police Command also urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activities, reiterating their resolve to combat criminal elements and ensure public security.
