Nigerian Oil Companies Reactivate Abandoned Wells to Boost Production and Cut Costs

Story: Written By Uzuh Rita Grace August 18,2025
Oil and gas companies in Nigeria are increasingly turning to the reactivation of old wells as part of efforts to reduce operational costs and improve production output.

Industry operators revealed that reviving dormant wells is more cost-effective than investing in new drilling projects, which require higher capital and longer timelines before yielding returns.

Energy analysts explained that this strategy helps companies maximize existing assets while addressing challenges posed by rising production costs, foreign exchange shortages, and fluctuating global oil prices.

According to experts, the revival of abandoned wells could add thousands of barrels per day to Nigeria’s output, supporting government efforts to meet production targets under the OPEC quota.

They also noted that this approach aligns with global industry trends, where oil firms are prioritizing efficiency and asset optimization in response to economic uncertainties and the transition to cleaner energy sources.
