Nigerian Government Considers Pay Rise for Tinubu, Shettima, Akpabio, Governors and Top Officials
The Federal Government of Nigeria is reportedly making moves to increase the salaries of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, state governors, ministers, and other top political office holders.
According to government insiders, discussions are ongoing with relevant agencies on the proposed salary adjustments, which are expected to cover federal and state executives, members of the National Assembly, and key public officials.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living and inflation, which many Nigerians argue is already squeezing household incomes. Critics say any salary increment for political leaders at this time could deepen public anger, given the economic hardship citizens are facing.
However, supporters of the review argue that adjusting the pay structure of top government officials is necessary to reflect current realities and prevent corruption in public service.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) is believed to be working on the framework, although no official announcement has been made.
If approved, the review will see significant changes in the remuneration of the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, State Governors, Ministers, and other senior officials across the federation.
Observers say the move will likely spark national debate, as labour unions have consistently demanded an upward review of the national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
