The project, under Solarge Nigeria Limited, was announced in Abuja following a partnership deal between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and Dutch firm Solarge BV.
According to the REA, the joint venture will localise solar panel production, support the federal government’s National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), and advance the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF).
“This partnership brings together InfraCorp’s financing expertise, REA’s policy leadership, and Solarge BV’s advanced technology to deliver world-class solar PV production in Nigeria,” the agency said in a statement.
Key Features of the Project
- Establishment of a 1GW solar PV plant in Nigeria.
- Target of 50% local content within the first three years.
- Technology transfer and workforce training to boost skills and create jobs.
- REA’s commitment to purchase at least 200MW of solar modules annually for five years to power schools, hospitals, and other public institutions.
Stakeholders React
Tanimu Yakubu, Director-General of the Budget Office, described the initiative as vital for Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability and industrial development.
“This partnership deepens our energy independence while expanding local manufacturing,” he said.
Abba Aliyu, MD/CEO of REA, emphasised that the deal is not just about energy access but about building Nigeria’s manufacturing capacity.
“We are aligning clean energy delivery with our mission to electrify communities and institutions,” he stated.
Dr. Lazarus Angbazo, MD/CEO of InfraCorp, called the project a “giant leap toward energy sovereignty.”
Similarly, Joost Brinkman, CEO of Solarge BV, noted that the venture would set a new standard for solar production in Africa.
“This factory will be built by Nigerians, for Nigerians, and it will transform solar manufacturing across the continent,” he said.
The plant will be managed by a board of directors representing all partners, including an independent director, while a dedicated Project Management Office (PMO) will oversee execution and compliance.
